Booking a photoshoot is exciting — it’s a chance to celebrate your story and create lasting memories. But one of the most common questions I get as a photographer is:

“What should we wear?”

The right outfits can truly elevate your images, adding timeless beauty and harmony. Here’s a complete guide to help you look and feel your best during your session.

1. Choose Timeless Over Trendy

Fashion changes fast, but your photos will last forever. Neutral tones, soft pastels, earthy shades, and classic pieces photograph beautifully. Think beige, cream, dusty blue, olive green, or soft blush. Let your environment inspire you, creating a natural harmony where your images perfectly complement the space.

Pro Tip: Avoid large logos or busy prints — they can distract from your faces.

2. Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of everyone wearing the exact same color (like all white shirts and jeans), try building a color palette of 2–3 complementary tones.

For example:

  • Mom in a soft floral dress

  • Dad in khaki chinos and a light blue shirt

  • Kids in neutral-toned outfits that tie the look together

3. Dress for the Season

  • Spring & Summer: Flowy dresses, linen shirts, light fabrics, sandals.

  • Autumn: Warm earth tones, cozy layers, boots, scarves.

  • Winter: Knits, coats, muted tones, boots, and neutral layers.

4. Think About Movement

Long dresses, skirts, or loose shirts add beautiful motion to your photos, especially in outdoor sessions. Fabrics that flow with the breeze bring life and elegance to your images.

5. Add Texture & Layers

Knit sweaters, denim jackets, linen shirts, or lace dresses create visual interest and depth in photos. A mix of textures looks amazing on camera.

6. Keep Comfort in Mind

If you’re uncomfortable in what you’re wearing, it will show. Choose outfits you can move, sit, and play in — especially for family sessions with little ones.

7. Accessorize Thoughtfully

Hats, belts, jewelry, or hair accessories can complete your look, but keep it minimal so it doesn’t overpower the photo.

8. Plan Ahead

Lay out outfits a few days before the shoot, iron them, and make sure everything fits properly. Planning early avoids stress on the day of your session.

Remember, the most important thing is that you feel confident and yourself. When you’re relaxed and happy, it shines through in every photo.

Ready to capture your own memories? I’d love to guide you through the process and help you create timeless images you’ll treasure forever.
